History & Growth

The Town of Cornelius was originally founded in 1893 when two successful Davidson cotton companies failed to reach an agreement about the appointment of the new local cotton weigher. For reasons perhaps we will never quite understand, the disagreement lead to one of the companies relocating further south, thus creating the Town of Cornelius.

Cornelius has expanded rapidly in recent years, with increasing numbers of people drawn to the spectacular scenery, the friendly community, and the high-quality contemporary housing. The U.S. Census Bureau showed the population of Cornelius had more than doubled from 2000 to 2010, achieving 24,866 residents. Estimates for 2015 show the population of Cornelius to have reached around 29,500, continuing this upward trend.

Cornelius is a vibrant, active town of young upwardly mobile families. The 2010 Census showed the majority of Cornelius residents are under 40 years old with a median income of $83,789. The rapid increase in popularity of Cornelius was driven by people’s desire to live in our charming community, and by the contemporary real estate constructions which satisfy the tastes of a discerning clientele.

Cornelius has a wealth of shopping, cultural, leisure, and entertainment options which can be as relaxed or as formal as you choose. For a natural, outdoors life, Cornelius’ ten parks offer over 205 acres of well-manicured green space whilst the 129 acres of surrounding undeveloped land includes seven miles of hiking trails. The jewel of Cornelius’ parklife community is Tripadvisor’s number one recommendation: Jetton Park. This 105-acre waterfront green space has a playground, tennis facilities, and is an idyllic spot for a family picnic.

Cornelius’ golf course is at home in the Peninsula Club, which has a clubhouse, swimming facilities, and a tennis center. This exceptional 18-hole championship course was designed by Reece Jones, and features the incredible backdrop of Lake Norman. For the keen sailor, the Peninsula Yacht Club offers 405 boat slips ranging from 25 to 45 feet for simple, neighborhood access to the largest lake in North Carolina.

Cornelius offers access to a variety of small, midsize, and large companies in a range of industries. The region’s major employer is Lowe’s Companies, Inc. of Mooresville, who employ over 13,000 staff, whilst the area has many small- and medium-sized companies in the finance and insurance industries. 

Cornelius’ major employers are currently Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and YMCA, however, the town’s growth has also given a boost to local industry, with new economic developments creating state-of-the-art commercial, office, and retail spaces in the area.
