Huntersville is the largest of Lake Norman’s towns, with a population of 46,773 in the 2010 census. Located at the southern end of Lake Norman, it is the town which benefits from the quickest access to downtown Charlotte, yet maintains the waterfront rural nature of living on Lake Norman. Huntersville offers many large single-family homes which were built in recent years, with outstanding architectural designs and interior finishes. A number of smaller family homes, townhouses and condos make Huntersville an affordable option for both ends of the market.

Cornelius has over 70 miles of shoreline on the southeast tip of Lake Norman and boasts Mecklenburg County’s only beach. It is regarded as one of the best real estate markets in the area, with a collection of modern single-family homes and townhouses which capture the best of contemporary interior and exterior design trends. As a highly-desirable residential area, Cornelius has grown consistently throughout the years, with the U.S. Census Bureau stating the population in 2010 to be 24,866.

Davidson is one of the smaller towns along Lake Norman, with a population recorded at just 10,944 in the 2010 census. Davidson is a college town, built around the education center which gives the town its name. The large college gives Davidson a vibrant, youthful main street which is ideal for young people and families alike. Mooresville is located on the northeast point of Lake Norman and is highly regarded for its eclectic mix of restaurants, museums, boutiques, cafes, and markets along the traditional-style main street. Away from the water, a number of older ranch-style homes make Denver affordable for smaller families or first-time buyers.

Those fortunate enough to live on Lake Norman have access to some of the best schools in North Carolina. The Lake Norman communities are within different school districts, each offering some outstanding education institutions for your children.

Residents of Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson are within the highly-regarded Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District, with a number of good quality schools in the local area, including Huntersville Elementary, which is rated 40th out of the 1,406 elementary schools in North Carolina. Cornelius is home to Bailey Middle School, which is in the top 4% of middle schools in the state, while William Amos Hough High School achieves the top 12%.

Mooresville is located within the Iredell-Statesville School District, however, local children attend the schools in the Lake Norman area and also have access to Mooresville Graded School District. This range of educational options yields some top-quality schools for children of all ages, including Mount Mourne School, which is rated 4th out of the 675 middle schools in North Carolina. Woodland Heights Elementary is rated in the top 5% of elementary schools in the state, and Lake Norman High achieves the top 20%.

On the east side of Lake Norman, Denver’s local children attend Lincoln County Schools. Denver is home to Rock Springs Elementary, which is in the top 6% of North Carolina elementary schools. North Lincoln Middle is rated 76th out of the state’s 675 middle schools, while East Lincoln High is better than average and only a short drive away.

Things to do in Lake Norman

Lake Norman offers a true watersports paradise for local residents, with a range of fantastic activities available for the majority of the year, thanks to the consistently good Lake Norman weather. A lot of residents enjoy the calm waters of Lake Norman by sailing, kayaking, rowing, and paddleboarding around this large stretch of water. The lake is perfect for swimming and fishing also, while those who enjoy more extreme sports can enjoy wakeboarding and power boating with no horsepower or speed limit on the lake.

The Lake Norman area offers an abundance of open green space and public parks throughout, while the expansive Lake Norman State Park - situated at the north of the lake - has over 30 miles of mountain biking routes and an abundance of hiking trails.
